Anxiety

If you are suffering from anxiety, chances are that you expend much of your energy on worry and/or panic. Every day becomes a struggle that can leave you feeling depleted and exhausted.

Anxiety goes beyond the typical tension one may feel when navigating life’s challenges. Unlike with fear, those suffering from anxiety may not be able to specify what they are anxious about. It can be a response to a vague, distant, or even unrecognized danger. Unlike fear, anxiety affects the whole being. Physiologically, anxiety may include bodily reactions such as rapid breathing, irregular heartbeat, stomach queasiness, etc. Behaviorally, anxiety can inhibit a person’s ability to think clearly, react appropriately and deal competently with everyday stressors and situations. Psychologically, anxiety is a subjective state of apprehension and uneasiness.

There are many different kinds and types of anxiety disorders. They include, but are not limited to, panic disorder, performance anxiety, agoraphobia, generalized anxiety disorder (GAD), obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), social anxiety disorder, phobias, post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).

For those suffering from anxiety, treatment can include CBT (cognitive behavioral therapy), symptom relief, exposure therapy and psychotherapy. When used in anxiety disorder treatment, CBT helps the individual identify and challenge the negative thinking patterns and irrational beliefs that are fueling the anxiety. By exploring patterns of thinking, and the beliefs that direct these thoughts, those struggling with their emotions can begin to modify their patterns of thinking and improve coping.
